Movie Review: The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower
Starring Matthew McConaughey & Idris Elba
Idris Elba plays Roland, the lone gunslinger whose main duty is to protect the dark tower from the man in black otherwise known as Walter portrayed by our favorite, dashing Southern gentleman Matthew McConaughey. Walter's goal is to use the minds of children to take down the tower so he may raise havoc into any world of his choosing. After Walter destroys his father, Roland starts his journey to face Walter and avenge his father's death. However his plans are spoiled when a young boy named Jake enters his world in hopes of figuring out his visions and destroy the man in black. The two team up on a quest to save the dark tower, children, and the world.
I must admit I haven't read the book but the movie was superb. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and Idris Elba is the perfect gunslinger; mysterious, strong, and yes, sexy too. He was charming, daring as the gunslinger; even taking a fatherly role to young Jake. It was touching to see the parallels between Jake and Roland. Their similarity of tragedy in their life but also how they balance each other out. The differences between them, down to their individual abilities truly speaks volumes. Jake is clearly a believer and his faith in Roland draws the hero out of him. On the other hand what Roland teaches his young apprentice saves his life in the end.
McConaughey is brillant as Walter. I have never seen him in such a role but proves a bit further of how he won his well deserved Oscar. His portrayal is dark and even gives me the creeps through the screen .It's the first time we don't hear his loveable accent. He truly digs deep into this character but at the same time you still can't help but love him.
If you haven't seen this film yet I encourage you too. It's certainly worth the wait and with two strong leads like Elba and McConaughey you can't go wrong. So sit back, bring out the popcorn and enjoy Stephen King's The Dark Tower.
