Movie Review-Ghostbusters (2016)
Ghostbusters
Released: July 15, 2016
Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth
With all the remakes that have come out recently, this is one of my favorites. I'll admit that when I first heard of an all female take on Ghostbusters, I was very critical (which I'm sure many were who were fans of the original cartoon and films) but the trailer intrigued me and the film won me over.
Erin Gilbert (portrayed by Kristen Wiig) is a professor at Columbia University up for tenure when her past resurfaces to haunt her in the form of a book. Years ago Erin and her friend Abby wrote a book about the paranormal, namely ghosts. Erin thought it was all behind her but she was mistaken when the owner of an old mansion shows up to her lecture hall to ask for her help to investigate the mansion. She turns him down but tracks Abby down to get her to take the books off of the internet. To make a long story short, Erin makes the decision to join Abby (McCarthy) and her new friend Jill Holtzmann (McKinnon) in pursuing the paranormal, to prove they are real. Patty (Jones), upon coming face to face with an evil ghost, seeks their help but in turn becomes apart of their group.
The casting is spot on. These parts were written for these ladies. They show that women can be just as bold and badass as men. There's no damsel in distress in this film. They don't flinch at the sight of a ghost, they go head on just like the original foursome made up of Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. I consider this film to not only be a reboot but a recreation. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones bring such a comedic new life to the franchise. It's no wonder with 1 SNL alum and 2 current SNL cast members as well as the raging comedic styles of McCarthy.
Chris Hemsworth is the toned down, ditzy secretary who is beautiful to look at and has amazing charm despite his lack of intelligence. Hemsworth's "Kevin" differs significantly from Annie Potts' "Janine" but is memorable nonetheless.
It was very exciting to see those from the original cast making memorable cameos. It is absolutely epic! While you view the film, keep your eyes open. You don't want to blink or you'll miss them! I definitely recommend this film and hope that we could see a sequel in the series. My only complaint is that I'd like to see Slimer take his rightful place with the Ghostbusters as he did in the cartoon. He was their friend, not an enemy. I think there could be great chemistry between Kevin and Slimer. I could see them being a comical duo and headache for the ladies. What you think?
Well, if you haven't seen this new version, you're missing out! For those looking to do reboots of a fan favorite, this is a great film to refer to. The Ghostbusters are still kickin' and keeping it real! Well done!
