Movie Review: In Time

In Time
Starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried
Release Date: October 28, 2011
I attempted to watch this film twice and needless to say, I finally finished it the second time I watched it. So here we go...
Justin Timberlake plays Will Salas, a poor boy who lives with is mom and wishes to take her to better places someday. The world is a different place where time has taken the place of paper currency. In other words, in order to pay for something you give minutes, hours, months, even years of your life for things like a cab ride or food.
The perk to this crazy way of living is that everyone stops aging at 25. After all, it is everyone's desire to remain young, is it not? Though I find it a little creepy to have a son saying hi to his mother who looks the same age as him though she's older.
Unfortunately, Will's mother (portrayed by Olivia Wilde) dies when her clock literally runs out. She is unable to meet with Will successfully. She leaps into his arms, dead while he's left in the street, sobbing by himself. Will then meets a man on the wrong part of town, who gives him all his time, taking himself out. Will, in turn, gives some of the his inherited time to his friends.
However when he ventures on the richer side of town, he meets a young lady named Sylvia, played by Amanda Seyfried. Sylvia is the daughter of one if not the richest man in the world, with a lot of time to spare. Together they run from the timekeepers and work to bring down her father to share that time with everyone. Through their course together, they fall in love and try to save each other from timing out.
What this film reflects is that time is precious and we shouldn't take it for granted but also that there are too many times that man tries to play God. Will and Sylvia fight against that "god" in the film to do what's right. The film is absolutely brilliant but I am still skeptical of Justin Timberlake as a leading man. While he did a great job, I found it difficult to move past the persona of Justin Timberlake hence causing his talent to be overlooked. I think that if JT wants the world to take him seriously as an actor, he needs to really reach outside the box. Does he have the potential? Absolutely but I feel that if it were not for Amanda Seyfried, he would have been drowning. I'm not feeling that commanding presence that you do from a leading man. It's not to say that he is a bad actor but that he needs to find a role that really forces him to dig down deep.
That being said, if you have not seen the film, watch it. It is a must see and come to your own conclusion about the hidden messages about life, death, and the nature of our lives. I would love to hear what you think so be sure to comment on this post. Have a great day!
